Friday's Fall Festival Offers
Opening of Quilt Show, Crafts,
Cultural Arts, and More

by: Bobby McDonald

The almost lost art of quilting was one of the major attractions at Friday's Hopkins County Fall Festival. Beautifully handmade quilts were on display, that had been handcrafted by local residents, and were awarded prizes by a panel of judges. Some of the quilts were heirloom quilts that had been handed from generation to generation, while others had been recently crafted and designed. Almost any pattern could be found on display in the SSHS Gymnasium, and many of the ladies who had fashioned them were on hand to explain the process to the many interested people viewing them.

Friends, Pam Sellers, Mary Dicken, and Peggy Walker admire this beautiful quilt that was fashioned in
an autumn leaf design. "It makes one anticipate the cooler temperatures in the months ahead," commented
Pam Sellers.

This beautiful wall hanging was quilted in a "cross" design.

Mrs. Ethel Winton beams proudly before the beautiful quilt she handcrafted. She recieved a
first-prize for her beautiful work.

This beautiful quilt also received a "class winner" and first-prize in its category.

And, while the quilts were being admired in the gymnasium, craft booths were located throughout the SSHS Cafeteria. A wide array of handcrafted items were offered for sale by talented individuals in the local area. From home decor, to clothing, and wooden and metal items, almost anything you could imagine was offered.

This vendor encouraged local patrons to get in the
mood for autumn.

And, this vendor had one thinking about trick-o-treating with these quismical scarecrows.

Enter the doors of the SSHS Library Media Room and one was taken away into a world of household arts. Entries were classed according to age in four categories: children, youth, adult, and senior citizen. Clothing, baked goods, photography, scrapbooks, horticultural plants, and even photographs and oil paintings were on display and had been created by residents of Hopkins County.

This carrot cake garnered a first prize and best of show! But,
there weren't any free samples!

And, these canned fruits and vegetables each received a first prize!

And, these Hopkins County grown peppers got a blue ribbon!

Crowds of people attended the Hopkins County Fall Festival on Friday and enjoyed the many events.

By noon on Friday, a large gathering of folks were already securing their stew sites and unloading a variety of decorations, as they got ready for the annual Hopkins County Stew Contest. Highlights of Saturday at the Fall Festival will be the Stew Contest, the Duck Race, and the Grand Finale of the Star Nite Peformance, where the 2006 Hopkins County Fall Festival Cover Girl will be named.

See Ya There!
